The Lucas has so many great films this summer — but that’s not all! Check out these fun promotions and contests we will be having as well.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail – June 14: You will have a chance to purchase The Savannah Tea Room‘s special blend of Holy Grail Tea, made just for the occasion.

This special tea is an autonomous collection of ingredients sure to help if you’ve ever been turned into a newt. The base is honeybush, a shrubbery, followed by a healthy infusion of your father’s elderberries. Spices such as cinnamon, orange peels, cloves and ginger have been expertly weighed against a duck and a witch. A hint of peppercorn will keep ferocious rabbits at bay. Lastly, an undercurrent of holy basil (Tulsi tea) makes this blend truly worthy of a quest. (No hamsters, cows, newts or African swallows were harmed in the making of this blend.) Brewing Instructions: This tea shall be brewed not 4 minutes, 3 minutes being too few and 8 too many. 5-7 minutes shall be the time you sons of silly persons shall brew.

On May 11th, the Lucas Theatre is screening STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. Many consider this to be the best of the franchise’s films with the original cast. Released in 1982, the movie combines classic episode references with up-to-date filmmaking (at least for the time).

The movie brings veterans William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelly, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols and the rest of the bridge crew of the USS Enterprise together with StarFleet Academy cadets. What is supposed to be a simple training exercise becomes a dire mission when Kirk’s old nemesis Khan reappears.

This special screening is timed to coincide with the release of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, giving Trekkies a weekend full of fun — and a chance to win tickets to see the new installment!

Show up as your favorite character from any of the Star Trek movies or tv shows for a chance to win great prizes. Audience approval will decide the winner. Grand Prize winner will receive an IMAX gift card to see the new Star Trek movie. 2nd and 3rd place prizes will also be awarded. All patrons attending in costume will receive a free NERDS ROPE. (Patrons are asked to refrain from wearing masks. Face paint only, please.)

This is special opportunity to see this modern sci-fi epic on the big screen. Purchase your tickets now.

We are very lucky to have a number of items relating to the history of the Lucas Theatre. Some of the most interesting are these brochures.

Arthur Lucas owned six theaters in Savannah. He would print up these colorful trifolds that featured all of the movies playing at his venues that week.

From an historical point of view, it is interesting to see just how many films Hollywood churned out back then. It was enough for the theaters to only run a film for three days each, and to keep all of Arthur’s theaters busy.

Some titles have been lost over time but you will likely recognize some of these movies as classics.

Do you have any items related the Lucas Theatre history? If so, we’d love to borrow them, scan them, and add to our archive. We’d return them, of course. Just get in touch and let us know.

In September of 2012, a woman born in 1928 brought her granddaughter to see Gone With the Wind at the Lucas Theatre. It was the first movie she ever saw, at age 11, when it came out. She is 84 now. She was grinning from ear to ear as she shared the special night, and the film that meant so much to her.

In the audience that night were over 1000 other people with their own reasons for wanting to see the classic film about the South, love, and revenge on the big screen. Perhaps it was the spectacle and the costumes, or the romance, or the anti-Yankee sentiments. Maybe it was just our popcorn.

Whatever their motives, that night, people were reminded of the power of film. In an era when anyone can call up a movie and watch it on their phone, there is something refreshing about allowing oneself to be a part of the movie-going experience and falling in love with the film all over again. It connects generations, as it did with the woman and her granddaughter. It revives passions and ideas. It touches an emotional core that no technology can (yet), because there is no replacement for true human connection about a single piece of art.

That is why we do what we do at the Lucas. Whether it’s a classic film, a children’s dance recital, a traveling opera or a live concert, we seek to connect the audience not only to the performance, but to each other. The collective experience is something that cannot be replicated anywhere else.

As an historic venue, we are here to remind people of a bygone era as well as usher it into the future.

Here, on this blog, we will be sharing stories like these as well as letting you know more about our upcoming events. In the meantime, have a look around and enjoy our newly-designed site.
