Marilyn Monroe Weekend – June 7 & 8:  Free raffle for these limited edition plates, featuring Marilyn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like It Hot.  Each is numbered and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail – June 14:  You will have a chance to purchase The Savannah Tea Room‘s special blend of Holy Grail Tea, made just for the occasion.

This special tea is an autonomous collection of ingredients sure to help if you’ve ever been turned into a newt. The base is honeybush, a shrubbery, followed by a healthy infusion of your father’s elderberries. Spices such as cinnamon, orange peels, cloves and ginger have been expertly weighed against a duck and a witch. A hint of peppercorn will keep ferocious rabbits at bay. How To Train Your Dragon – June 22:  Bring the kids for this animated film and get their picture taken with a life-size cutout of Toothless the dragon.

Top Hat – June 28: Wear a top hat to the film and receive a free popcorn from our concessions stand.

Cool Hand Luke – July 12: Enter the free raffle to win the large poster for Cool Hand Luke.  Who doesn’t want a giant Paul Newman looking at them all day…

Mary Poppins – July 20: Dress as any character from Mary Poppins and receive a free popcorn from our concessions stand.

Last of the Mohicans – August 3: Enter the free raffle to win the large poster for Last of the Mohicans.

All films begin at 7 p.m.  Lobby will open at 6 p.m.  Tickets are available for purchase in advance.  You can also purchase a Lucas Theatre Movie Pass, which is eligible for use with all of these films.  So dust off that top hat and get ready for great movies all summer long at the Lucas Theatre.

Arthur Lucas owned six theaters in Savannah. He would print up these colorful trifolds that featured all of the movies playing at his venues that week.

From an historical point of view, it is interesting to see just how many films Hollywood churned out back then. It was enough for the theaters to only run a film for three days each, and to keep all of Arthur’s theaters busy.

Some titles have been lost over time but you will likely recognize some of these movies as classics.

In the audience that night were over 1000 other people with their own reasons for wanting to see the classic film about the South, love, and revenge on the big screen. Perhaps it was the spectacle and the costumes, or the romance, or the anti-Yankee sentiments. Maybe it was just our popcorn.

Whatever their motives, that night, people were reminded of the power of film. In an era when anyone can call up a movie and watch it on their phone, there is something refreshing about allowing oneself to be a part of the movie-going experience and falling in love with the film all over again. It connects generations, as it did with the woman and her granddaughter. It revives passions and ideas. It touches an emotional core that no technology can (yet), because there is no replacement for true human connection about a single piece of art.

That is why we do what we do at the Lucas. Whether it’s a classic film, a children’s dance recital, a traveling opera or a live concert, we seek to connect the audience not only to the performance, but to each other. The collective experience is something that cannot be replicated anywhere else.

As an historic venue, we are here to remind people of a bygone era as well as usher it into the future.
